How WorkCover Imaging Works

Your treating doctor examines you and provides an imaging referral specifying the examination and the area to be imaged.

Call your nearest clinic with your referral and claim details. Our team checks what is required for your examination and arranges approval with the insurer where this is needed.

Bring your referral and claim details with you. Your examination is performed by our radiographers or sonographers, or by a radiologist where the referral is for a procedure.

Our radiologists report your images to your referring doctor. Where required, the report is also provided to your insurer or case manager as part of your claim.

Imaging Available for Workplace Injuries

Workplace injuries are assessed using the same range of imaging we provide across the practice. Your referral will specify what is required.

X-ray, commonly the first examination for suspected fractures and bone injury. See our X-Ray page.

Ultrasound, for muscles, tendons, ligaments, and soft tissue injuries. See our Ultrasound Scan page.

CT, for complex fractures and detailed bony assessment. See our CT Scan page.

MRI, for detailed soft tissue and spinal assessment, performed at our Ormeau MRI Centre. See our MRI Scan page.

Image guided injections, where a procedure is requested rather than a diagnostic scan. See our Interventional Procedures page.

For sporting and activity related injuries outside a workers compensation claim, see our Sports Imaging page.

Costs

For accepted claims, imaging is billed directly to the insurer, so there are usually no out of pocket costs for the injured worker.

Where a claim has not yet been accepted, or where approval has not been obtained for a particular examination, different arrangements may apply. Our team will explain your position clearly before your appointment so there are no surprises.

Information for Referring Doctors

Approval requirements differ between examinations under workers compensation arrangements, and MRI in particular has specific referral requirements that differ from standard Medicare arrangements.

Our team can assist with confirming claim status and arranging approval before an appointment is made. Contact your nearest clinic to discuss a patient’s imaging, or see our Referrer Support section.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a claim number to have WorkCover imaging?
In most cases yes, as your claim number allows us to bill your insurer directly and to arrange approval where required. If you do not yet have a claim number, contact our team before booking so we can advise you.
Will I have to pay for my scan?
For accepted claims, imaging is billed directly to the insurer and there are usually no out of pocket costs. Where a claim has not been accepted or approval has not been obtained, different arrangements may apply and our team will explain this before your appointment.
Do I still need a referral?
Yes. A referral from your treating doctor is required, and it needs to specify the examination and the area to be imaged.
Who receives my results?
Your report is sent to your referring doctor. Where required as part of your claim, it is also provided to your insurer or case manager.
Can I have an MRI for my work injury?
MRI is available at our Ormeau MRI Centre. Approval requirements for MRI under workers compensation arrangements differ from standard Medicare arrangements and depend on who has referred you. Contact our team with your referral and claim details and we will confirm what applies.
What if my claim has not been accepted yet?
Contact our team with your details. In some circumstances imaging may still be arranged, and our team will explain the position and any costs before your appointment.
Which clinic should I attend?
X-ray, ultrasound, and CT are available across our clinics, and MRI is performed at Ormeau. Our bookings team will direct you to the most appropriate clinic for the examination on your referral.
