When a Thyroid FNAC May Be Requested
Your doctor may refer you for a thyroid FNAC:
Following a thyroid nodule found during a neck ultrasound or physical examination.
To assess a nodule with features on ultrasound that warrant sampling.
To assess a nodule that has grown or changed since a previous scan.
To sample a lymph node in the neck where further assessment is recommended.
Being referred for sampling does not by itself indicate a diagnosis. The purpose of the procedure is to establish what a nodule is so that your doctor can advise you accurately.
How We Perform Your Thyroid FNAC
- Your procedure is performed by an experienced radiologist using real-time ultrasaound.
- You will lie on your back with your neck gently extended to give clear access to the thyroid. The skin is cleaned with antiseptic, and local anaesthetic may be used depending on the procedure.
- A very fine needle, thinner than that used for a standard blood test, is guided into the nodule under ultrasound visualisation, and a small sample of cells is collected. Several samples are usually taken to give the laboratory enough material to assess. Each pass takes only a few seconds, and you will be asked not to swallow, cough, or talk while the needle is in place.
- Gentle pressure is applied afterwards and a small dressing is placed. Most appointments are completed within about 30 minutes, including preparation.

When will I get my results?
Your samples are analysed by a pathology laboratory and results are sent to your referring doctor. Results are not available on the day, so please arrange a follow-up appointment with your doctor.
Why might I need the procedure repeated?
Occasionally a sample does not contain enough cells for the laboratory to assess. If this happens, your doctor may recommend repeating the procedure. This is a recognised part of the process and does not indicate a particular result.
Do I need a referral?
