Types of MRI Scans We Provide

Your referring doctor will specify the region to be scanned. Common MRI examinations include:

Detailed imaging of the brain, commonly requested to investigate headaches, neurological symptoms, or follow up other imaging findings.

High-resolution imaging of the cervical, thoracic, or lumbar spine, commonly requested for back and neck pain, disc-related conditions, and nerve symptoms.

Detailed imaging of joints such as the knee, shoulder, hip, ankle, and wrist, commonly requested for sports injuries and soft tissue conditions. See our Sports Imaging page for related services.

Imaging of the abdominal and pelvic organs where detailed soft tissue assessment is required.

If your referral relates to spinal injections rather than diagnostic imaging, see our Lumbar Injections, Cervical Injections, or Interventional Procedures pages.

How We Perform Your MRI

Your MRI is performed by our experienced team at the Ormeau MRI Centre. You will lie on a padded table that moves into the scanner, and you will be asked to keep still while the images are taken. The machine produces knocking sounds during the scan, and you will be given hearing protection and a call button to communicate with our staff at all times.

The scan is painless, though it may take between 20 to 45 minutes depending on the examination. For certain studies, contrast may be required and will be administered safely by our qualified team when necessary.

Preparing for Your MRI

MRI uses a strong magnetic field, so safety screening before your scan is essential. As a general guide:

Tell us when booking if you have a pacemaker, defibrillator, cochlear implant, aneurysm clip, or any other implanted device, as some devices are not compatible with MRI.

Tell us about any metal in your body, including surgical implants, metal fragments, or shrapnel.

Let us know if you are or may be pregnant.

Remove all metal items before your scan, including jewellery, watches, hairpins, hearing aids, and cards with magnetic strips.

Let us know if you experience claustrophobia, so our team can support you and discuss options before your appointment.

Bring your referral and any relevant previous imaging with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an MRI scan safe?
MRI uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves rather than radiation, and is considered very safe for most people. Safety screening before your scan ensures any implants or devices are identified. Tell our team about any implanted devices or metal in your body when you book.
How long does an MRI take?
Most MRI examinations take between 20 and 45 minutes, depending on the region being scanned. Our team will confirm the expected duration when you book.
Do I need a referral for an MRI?
Yes, a referral from your GP or specialist is required. Medicare rebates for MRI depend on the type of referral and the examination requested, so our team will confirm eligibility and any fees when you book.
What if I am claustrophobic?
Let our team know when you book. Our staff will explain the process, support you throughout the scan, and you will have a call button to communicate with us at all times. Discussing your concerns in advance helps us make your scan as comfortable as possible.
Can I have an MRI if I have a metal implant or pacemaker?
Some implants and devices are MRI compatible and some are not. It is essential to tell our team about any implanted device or metal in your body when booking, so our staff can confirm whether your scan can proceed safely.
Which Radiant Radiology clinics offer MRI?
MRI is performed at our Ormeau MRI Centre, which serves patients from Pimpama, Yarrabilba, Elanora, and across the Gold Coast and Logan. Our other clinics can refer you to Ormeau for your MRI while providing X-ray, CT, and ultrasound locally.
