Bone Mineral Density (BMD) Scan at Radiant Radiology, Gold Coast & Logan

Radiant Radiology provides BMD (bone mineral density) scanning, also known as DEXA or bone densitometry. A BMD scan measures the density of your bones, most commonly at the hip and lower spine, and is the standard test used in Australia to assess bone health and fracture risk.

The scan is quick, painless, and uses a very low dose of X-rays, lower than a standard chest X-ray. You remain fully clothed and simply lie still on a padded table while the scanner passes over you.

When a BMD Scan May Be Requested

Your doctor may refer you for a bone density scan:

To assess bone health where risk factors for osteoporosis are present.

Following a fracture that occurred after minimal trauma.

Where long term medication that can affect bone density has been prescribed.

Where a medical condition associated with reduced bone density is present.

To monitor bone density over time, or to assess response to treatment.

Your doctor determines whether a scan is appropriate for you and specifies the clinical indication on your referral.

How We Perform Your BMD Scan

Your scan is performed by our radiographers and takes only a short time.

You lie on a padded table, fully clothed, while a scanning arm passes above you. There is no enclosed tunnel and nothing touches you during the scan. You will be asked to lie still and, at times, to hold your breath briefly.

Measurements are usually taken at the lower spine and one hip. If these areas cannot be measured, for example due to previous surgery or hip replacements, the forearm may be measured instead.

Most appointments are completed within around 15 to 20 minutes. Our radiologists review your measurements and provide a report to your referring doctor.

Understanding Your Results

Your results are reported to your referring doctor, who will discuss them with you.

Bone density results are usually expressed as a T-score, which compares your measurement with that of a healthy young adult. A Z-score, which compares your measurement with others of your age and sex, may also be reported and is often used for younger patients.

Your doctor interprets these results alongside your history, risk factors, and any previous scans. Where possible, comparison with earlier scans performed on the same type of equipment gives the most reliable assessment of change over time.

Preparing for Your BMD Scan

Our team will confirm your specific instructions when you book. As a general guide:

Wear comfortable clothing without metal zips, buttons, buckles, or underwire, as metal can interfere with the measurement. You will usually not need to change into a gown.

Avoid calcium supplements on the day of your scan, as these can affect the result. Continue any other medication as usual unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Tell us when booking if you have had a scan involving contrast dye, a barium study, or a nuclear medicine scan in the previous week, as a short wait may be needed.

Let us know if you are or may be pregnant.

Bring your referral and any previous bone density scan reports, as comparison assists interpretation.
