Radiant Radiology provides CBCT (cone beam computed tomography), a three dimensional scan of the teeth, jaws, and surrounding structures. CBCT uses a cone shaped X-ray beam that rotates around your head to build a detailed three dimensional image.
CBCT is requested when three dimensional information is needed to answer a specific clinical question that a standard dental X-ray cannot address. Your referring practitioner determines when this is appropriate.

When a CBCT May Be Requested
Your dentist, orthodontist, oral surgeon, or specialist may request a CBCT for:
Dental implant planning, where precise bone measurement at the implant site is required.
Assessment of impacted teeth, including their position relative to nearby nerves and adjacent teeth.
Complex root canal assessment, where detailed root anatomy is needed.
Assessment of the temporomandibular joints (TMJ).
Investigation of cysts, lesions, or other findings identified on a previous X-ray.
Surgical and orthodontic planning where three dimensional detail affects the treatment approach.
How CBCT Differs from an OPG
A CBCT is not simply a more detailed OPG. The two examinations answer different questions.
An OPG produces a two dimensional panoramic image, uses a low radiation dose, and provides the information needed for most routine dental assessment.
A CBCT produces a three dimensional image and involves a higher radiation dose than an OPG. It is appropriate where the additional three dimensional information will influence the treatment decision, and it is not a routine substitute for a panoramic X-ray.

How We Perform Your CBCT
The scan is quick and non invasive. You are positioned at the scanner, either seated or standing, with your head supported to keep it still.
The scanning arm then rotates around your head, usually in under a minute. Nothing touches your face, there is no injection, and there is no enclosed tunnel. You will be asked to stay still and breathe normally during the rotation.
Most appointments are completed within a few minutes. Our radiologists review the images and provide a report to your referring practitioner.
Preparing for Your CBCT
No special preparation is required. As a general guide:
Remove jewellery, earrings, glasses, hairpins, hearing aids, and any removable dental plates or dentures before the scan.
Let us know if you are or may be pregnant.
Bring your referral and any previous dental imaging, including recent OPG images, as these assist the radiologist.
