How We Perform Your Calcium Score Scan
Small adhesive ECG dots are placed on your chest so we can monitor your heart rhythm during the scan and time the images to your heartbeat.
You lie on the CT table, which moves through the scanner. You will be asked to keep still and to hold your breath for a short period, usually around 10 seconds, while the images are taken.
No injection and no contrast dye are used for calcium scoring. Most appointments are completed within 10 to 20 minutes including preparation, and you can return to normal activities straight away.

Understanding Your Calcium Score
Your score is reported as a number reflecting the amount of calcified plaque detected in your coronary arteries. It is usually reported alongside a percentile, which compares your result with others of your age and sex.
A score of zero indicates no calcified plaque was detected.
Your referring doctor interprets your score together with your blood pressure, cholesterol, family history, and other risk factors. The score is one input into an overall assessment rather than a diagnosis on its own.
It is important to understand that calcium scoring detects calcified plaque only. It does not detect non calcified plaque, and it does not assess narrowing within the arteries. Your doctor will explain what your result means in your individual circumstances and whether any further tests are appropriate.
