Radiant Radiology is dedicated to women’s health, and we provide mammography at our Women’s Imaging Centre in Pimpama. A mammogram is a low-dose X-ray examination of the breast, used to assess breast tissue and detect changes that may not be able to be felt.

Types of Mammography We Provide
Diagnostic Mammography
Performed when you have a specific breast symptom or concern, or to follow up a previous finding. A diagnostic mammogram may include additional views, and is often combined with breast ultrasound for a fuller assessment.
Contrast Mammography
A specialised technique that combines mammography with an intravenous contrast agent. The contrast highlights areas of increased blood supply within the breast, which can assist in assessing abnormalities that may be less clearly seen on a standard mammogram. Contrast mammography is performed when specifically requested by your referring doctor, commonly in more complex assessments or where breast tissue is dense.

How We Perform Your Mammogram
Your mammogram is performed by a trained mammographer. Each breast is positioned on the imaging plate and briefly compressed to spread the tissue and produce a clear image at the lowest practical radiation dose. Compression lasts only a few seconds per image.
Compression can feel uncomfortable, though it should not be painful. Tell your mammographer if you are uncomfortable at any point, and they will adjust and support you through the examination.
For contrast mammography, a small intravenous line is placed to administer contrast before the images are taken. Our team will explain this step and check your history before proceeding.
Our radiologists review your images and provide a report to your referring doctor. Please book a follow-up appointment with your doctor to discuss your results.
Preparing for Your Mammogram
- Our team will confirm your specific instructions when you book. As a general guide:
- Avoid deodorant, antiperspirant, talcum powder, perfume, and lotion on the day of your appointment, as these can affect image quality.
- Wear a two-piece outfit, as you will need to undress from the waist up and will be provided with a gown.
- Bring any previous breast imaging performed elsewhere, as comparison with earlier images assists interpretation.
- Let us know when booking if you are or may be pregnant, are breastfeeding, or have breast implants.
- For contrast mammography, tell us at booking if you have kidney problems, diabetes, asthma, or have previously reacted to contrast dye.
- Bring your referral with you.

Do I need a referral for a mammogram?
Most ultrasound scans take between 15 and 45 minutes, depending on the area being examined. Your sonographer will confirm the expected duration when you book.
What is the difference between a screening mammogram and a diagnostic mammogram?
A screening mammogram checks for changes in women without symptoms and is provided free through BreastScreen Queensland for eligible women. A diagnostic mammogram is requested when there is a specific symptom, concern, or previous finding to assess, and usually involves additional images.
Does a mammogram hurt?

What is a contrast mammogram?

When will my results be ready?
Breast imaging is reviewed carefully by our radiologists and results are not usually available on the day. A report is sent to your referring doctor, so please arrange a follow-up appointment to discuss your results.
